Disrupting Education for Equity
Hayley Sparks, Academic Director at academyEX
It is a well-known fact that education is not equal for all, and persistent inequalities and iniquities have been created and perpetuated through educational systems over time. Addressing these disparities is crucial for creating a more just and equitable society. However, the question remains, how can this be achieved? How can future-focused curriculum and delivery approaches, such as project-based learning, be used as a change mechanism while maintaining the rigour and standards characterising higher education?
At The Mind Lab & Tech Futures Lab (academyEX), the team is dedicated to disrupting the status quo of education. Their approach to teaching and learning is constantly evolving, with a focus on providing an inclusive learning environment for all learners. The lab understands that delivering postgraduate education to professionals in the workforce is a unique opportunity to disrupt the status quo and provide access to education for those who may have been excluded in the past.
One of the key themes that the lab focuses on is privilege and equity in education. They draw on their experience teaching postgraduate education on the future of work, technology, and sustainability to provide a perspective on these issues. The goal is to prompt thought and challenge the ways in which assessment, which has become a central element of education, is conceptualised and shapes the educational experiences of students engaging in postgraduate project-based learning.
Assessment, particularly in postgraduate education, is often viewed as a one-size-fits-all approach, assuming that fairness can only be achieved if everyone is judged by the same criteria. However, this doesn’t consider the different experiences, competencies, knowledge, and skills that all students bring to the classroom.
It is essential to question this notion of fairness and ask who decides that everyone should take the same exam and what happens to those left behind. The role of collaboration and diversity in the assessment process must also be considered. The team at academyEX continuously review their practices to ensure they are innovating and always striving for a more equitable delivery of their programs.
In conclusion, reducing inequalities in education is crucial for creating a more just and equitable society. Project-based learning and future-focused curriculum can be powerful tools for driving change, but ensuring that assessment practices are inclusive and equitable is essential. By continuously questioning the status quo and examining their own practices, the team at academyEX are working towards creating a more inclusive and equitable education system for all learners.
